Harmonic Series Calculator

Enter a note from the chromatic scale and the octave you want start with and click Calculate.

The calculator shows:

  • Harmonics up to the 16th partial.

  • The note name for each harmonic in the series.

  • The octave for that note.

  • The frequency for each harmonic.

  • The frequency of note if tuned in 12TET

  • The difference between the 12TET frequency and the harmonic series frequency in Cents.

In VSL’s SYNCHRON PLAYER there is a delay setting for each channel on the mixer page, (see image at left in the red box). The Delay On switch is circled in blue, and the field to enter the number in milliseconds is circled in yellow. To get impressive results in room perception, you can add a delay to that microphone which will add distance, measured in milliseconds.

Using the calculator below:

  1. Select the temperature, (start with 75 degrees F to represent a concert hall)

  2. Select Distance Type: Choose Fixed Instrument List or Custom Distance in meters

  3. Select the Instrument Section, (if you chose Fixed Instrument Type)

  4. Add the Height of the Decca Tree. 10 meters is usually good.

  5. Type in the Horizontal Position on Stage in meters; This is the left or right distance from the center of stage that an instrument sits. For example, Horns are about -8 (meters), Oboes are about 1 or 2, etc. Look at the stage plot image below left and check the numbers I’ve entered (in meters). All stages are slightly different, but I’ve provided a good starting point.

  6. Click Calculate.

  7. The Result, Time to reach DeccaTree: - - milliseconds, is the number that you will enter in the delay field in Synchron Player.

Enter the temperature, select the instrument section or enter a custom distance, specify the height of the Decca Tree array, and optionally the horizontal position on stage to calculate the time it takes for sound to reach the DeccaTree microphone array.

The Harmonic Series seen through a Spectrogram

Spectrogram of a Harp playing A0 at 55 Hz

The history of harmony is the history of the development of the human ear, which has gradually assimilated, in their natural order, the successive intervals of the harmonic series.
